Caring for the Restless Soul

Caring for the Restless Soul

A man was such a disgrace to his mother that she lost sleep and begged God for years to save him.  He fathered children out of wedlock, he lived a dissolute and wicked life in open rebellion against God.  Finally, Monica his mother, had her prayers answered and Augustine came to Christ.  This happened more than 1600 years ago and each of us is indebted to Monica and to Augustine.  St. Augustine wrote voluminously and his writings have affected virtually every Christian on the planet as he clarified Christian teachings, wrote his “Confessions” and became the Bishop of the church in Hippo, North Africa.  Take time to read his story…you will not be disappointed.  Augustine said this, “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.”

Monday…The ancients could hear and feel their heartbeat the same as us.  They believed that the heart, because it was the only organ of which one can be aware of through the senses, was the seat of emotion and of the human being itself.  We use “heart”, “soul”, and “spirit” interchangeably but there are subtle differences.  Nevertheless, we get the idea that the real us…the internal us…that which we really are can experience restlessness instead of peace and calm.  The cure for this restlessness is God.    Matthew 11:29

Tuesday…I heard of the problem called, “restless leg syndrome” several years ago.  It is no joke to those who suffer from this and it could be a symptom of Venous disease.  The legs jerk and spasm uncontrollably robbing one of sleep.  I have met many people during my ministry who have “restless soul syndrome”.  They have no peace.  They cannot enjoy the calm that comes from resting in the Lord.  They have no assurance and they have no Guide through life.  What a tragedy!  Colossians 3:15, I Peter 5:7

Wednesday…Is there anything better than retiring after a good day of work or a good day spent in wholesome recreation or a good day spent with one’s family?  I just read that at least one-fifth of all Americans (children included) suffer from problems falling asleep.  There are a myriad of things which cause this of course, but many experts say that our hectic schedules hurt our ability to relax and fall asleep.  The Bible says, “Be still and know that I am God.”  Psalms 46:10

Thursday…Mental health professionals (both Christian and non-Christian) understand that unresolved guilt leads to a restless spirit/soul.  There is always the chance of exposure and shame.  Not so with the Christian who has his/her sins covered by the blood of Jesus!  Psalms 103:12

Friday…What if you KNEW that you were saved and on your way to Heaven?  Could anything…anything!…really get to you to where you had a restless soul?  Note what John the Apostle says, “I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.”  I John 5:13
